 Back to Larimar Information

What is "Larimar" & where is it found?

Larimar is a rare form of blue pectolite. The only known source of Larimar is a remote mountain in the Dominican Republic. The exact location of the gemstone was discovered in 1974.

Does Larimar come from the ocean?

No, the only deposit is a one square kilometer area of a high mountain in the Dominican Republic.

How was it discovered and named "LARIMAR"?

In the 1950's, the residents of a small fishing village began finding blue pebbles on a beach near the mouth of a river. Over the years, an artist from the city began traveling to the village to buy the stones for his work. When he needed more than could be found on the beach, the local villagers set out to find the source. They finally discovered blue rocks along one of the tributaries of the Bahoruco River. Since then, the mining of Larimar has brought a boon to the local people. The stone was named by Miguel Mendez after his beautiful young daughter LARIssa and the Spanish word for sea, MAR.

What is the color range of LARIMAR?

It comes in a wide variety of colors ranging from white to gentle greens to the deepest blues. It has been called the Caribbean gemstone, not only because of where it is found, but also because of the colors, which mimic the variations in color of the Caribbean Sea. The color variation, patterning and metaphysical energy are what make the stone so unique and alluring.

How is LARIMAR formed?

It is thought that the Gemstone was formed by a secondary volcanic process. Some time after the initial eruption, the lava settled and cooled. During this process cracks and fissures formed within the lava. Hydrothermal fluid (mineral rich superheated steam from deep within the earth) under high pressure was forced to the surface. In the process, it flowed through the cracks and fissures (and other volcanic chimneys and tubes) where it cooled and crystallized into the stone we see today.

How is LARIMAR mined?

It is mined by hand only, not mined by machines in massive quantities. A person underground at the bottom of a mine shaft works with a pick. The journey starts with this one man working away until he has extracted enough precious stone to fill a simple bucket. The reason that he is so important is that it shows the volume of raw material available. Imagine for one minute another man, sitting inside a large excavation machine, scooping up several tons of material at a time, and pouring this onto a conveyor belt. That is definitely not Larimar mining.
These local villagers dig vertical shafts deep into the mountain and then begin to tunnel around searching for deposits. Once a Larimar vein is found they try to follow the fissure to its source hoping to find even larger deposits. It can take many months of excavation to locate a small deposit, and even then, it is likely that the stone will not be suitable for fine jewelry designs.

Is it a hard stone?

Yes, it is 5-7 on Mohs hardness scale, which is excellent for jewelry use, equal to quartz and Amethyst. It will not scratch easily and is quite durable.

What are the Metaphysical Properties of the stone?

Metaphysically the stone is highly energetic and is in considerable demand within the metaphysical community. There are many purported uses and attributes. It is an Earth healing stone and is used for bringing serenity to the environment. Larimar also facilitates inner wisdom and calm. The energy is also used to stimulate the heart, throat, third-eye, and crown chakra.

How Larimar is used in Feng Shui?

It represents the energy of the mountains and is very powerful to nurture the "chi" of the earth, air, water and fire, for its peculiarity of connecting with the four elements. The Larimar power "chi growth", which promotes luck in our personal relationships.  The Larimar attracts the goodwill of others toward us. The smooth stones mounted on stylish bases are beneficial to love. If we want to create "sort of support" should keep a larimar, is an enhancer of energy in our body and a  natural chi harmonizer.

How is Larimar processed?

Natural Larimar should not be 'processed' at all. It should be cut and polished only. However there are companies actively treating and dyeing stones to make them look enough like Larimar to fool the average buyer. There are also plastics and other synthetics in the marketplace that are often sold as Larimar. As with any desirable product, trickery and deception is rampant and there is always someone wanting to take advantage of unsuspecting buyers.

What does the term AAA refer to?

At one time, it was a grading term, however due to overexploitation it has now become a worthless marketing phrase. Most unknowledgeable vendors sell everything as "AAA", which was supposed to signify the best! Unlike Diamonds there is no "standardized scale" by accredited organizations, so everything becomes labeled AAA and so the term has become relatively meaningless.

Why is it so expensive Larimar?

Apart from its coveted beauty and its excellent properties, a shortage of stone (remember that is only found in just one square kilometre of the Earth),  the difficulty in removing the Larimar. It lies over 300 meters deep and their removal must be done entirely by hand.

Larimar is a very rare and unusual stone found in only a small location in the world. There is an incredibly large variation in natural Larimar.

Just like butterfly wings and fingerprints, Larimar is always unique. The amount of Jewelry grade material that is selected by MarahLago™ is usually 3% to 4%. The selection process decides which larimar will be worked and become an ambassador of the brand. It is of course a most important process, so only the best possible stone is set into jewelry.

In view of these data, rather we wonder: why is not it more expensive Larimar?
